Geoquip Marine signs ships for Inmarsat Fleet Xpress – Digital Ship

Inmarsat has an agreement in place with Geoquip Marine allowing the offshore geotechnical solutions provider to offer dedicated Fleet Xpress bandwidth as part of its vessel charter agreements and separate connectivity for onboard personnel.

Four Geoquip integrated geotechnical vessels have introduced Fleet Xpress Charterer Network services for the exclusive use of charterers as well as connectivity via Wi-Fi Fleet Hotspot services for those working offshore. In a configuration unique to Inmarsat, Fleet Xpress enables connect multiple networks to the vessel via a single antenna, with activation requiring no new hardware or installation work on board.

The vessels currently operate off the east coast of the United States, off Taiwan and in Europe.

“Being able to offer Charterer Network service to drilling companies without adding hardware gives the Fleet Xpress user a competitive advantage at the bidding stage,” Griffin noted. “Low-speed networks need additional antennas to support comparable service. The Split Network capability is a base capability for Fleet Xpress, activated on demand. We expect others to follow Geoquip’s lead.

“Providing a dedicated high-speed network for crew and contractors via Fleet Hotspot offers a major improvement in onboard well-being,” added Griffin. “Inmarsat monitors usage and adjusts capacity to reflect the needs of those working at sea.”
