Frantic Coastguard volunteers valiantly attempted to launch their rescue vessel for 20 minutes across a sandbar as a man fought for his life in his overturned vessel on Tairua Bar. He died later.

“Board staff will continue to meet with both parties to review what options may be available in the future, to try to achieve the best possible results in the dynamic coastal environment.”

coastguard advice
With record numbers of people on the water this summer and the number of drowning deaths significantly exceeding previous years, the Coast Guard is calling on all boaters to take a step back before setting out, ensuring your vessel is prepared with all appropriate safety equipment including PFDs/life jackets suitable for everyone on board, you have two forms of communication, you have checked the weather throughout your trip and you have recorded a trip report with Coastguard either via the Coastguard app, on VHF or by dialing *500.
