Ecochlor has announced the completion of all onshore and onboard testing of the EcoOne™ Filterless Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) in preparation for application for USCG and IMO BWMS Code Type Approval.
DNV was selected to act as the Independent Laboratory (IL) throughout the process and was responsible for the assessment, inspection, supervision of testing and submission of EcoOne Type Approval applications ™ BWMS.
Terrestrial biological efficacy (BE) testing was undertaken by the Golden Bear Research Center (GBRC) in California, USA. The GBRC performed the tests, analyzed the samples and managed the test results in the format required by IL. Toxicity tests on all the effluents were also successfully carried out as part of the land trials.
Onboard trials, undertaken by DHI as a sub-laboratory, were conducted to evaluate the BE and related onboard operational (OP) performance of the EcoOne™ BWMS aboard a commercial vessel. DHI performed the tests on board, analyzed the samples, managed the test results in the format required by IL. Due to global pandemic restrictions, onboard testing was permitted to be carried out on two commercial vessels owned by Maran Tankers, a VLCC and an Aframax, during their typical voyage routes during the 6-month test period. .

EcoOne™ Filterless BWMS is a one-step treatment process using ClO2 alone. Vessels using this system can operate anywhere in marine and brackish waters (i.e. ≥ 1PSU) and without temperature or turbidity restrictions.
The EcoOne™ Hybrid BWMS has a dual mode of operation with filtration and ClO2 or ClO2 alone. This system will allow shipowners to operate their BWMS with or without a filter. This option will suit shipowners looking for the flexibility of unrestricted operation in fresh water on a global scale, with the convenience of a filterless system. Vessels that already have an Ecochlor BWMS with filters installed can upgrade to the hybrid option at minimal cost.
